Dear Mark Graul,

March 23, 2007

Thank you for your continued work on behalf of Republican candidates in the state. It was partly because of you that Mark Green, a random and relatively unobjectionable candidate, ran a laughably inept campaign and was defeated by an unpopular governor in a landslide. Congratulations on deciding to contest that election on the grounds of shady campaign financing, when your own candidate was mired in a million-dollar ethical scandal.

I am particularly enthusiastic about job you’re doing for Annette Ziegler. The AP article in the WSJ describes your most recent commecial thus:

Also on Monday, Ziegler started running a new TV ad statewide that denies the charges and features a narrator saying, “There is no scandal.” Using black and white video of Clifford cast against a full moon, words in a horror movie-style font on the screen note Clifford is an “immigration lawyer.” The ad closes with the sound of a howling wolf and a narrator saying, “We need a judge on the court, not a politician slinging mud.” Ziegler spokesman Mark Graul said the ad was designed to “set the record straight.”

I don’t know what the hell that means. Are immigrants werewolves? Are you trying to appeal to the segment of the population that would make an association like that? Or perhaps Linda Clifford is the wolf, and we’re the sheep. But since when do wolves “sling mud”?

Or maybe it’s a secretly ironic argument about the futility of negative campaigning. “Look at me,” Ziegler might be saying. “I don’t go in for mud-slinging, and I would never accuse my opponent of being a mythological creature who will eat your children if you’re not careful.”

The high quality of this argument only raises my hopes that our next Supreme Court justice will be able to bring a discerning intellect and keen understanding of the law to the court.

Sincerely,
Someone who will be voting for Linda Clifford

P.S. - Be sure to read Jay, as well.

[...] It’s a sad commentary on our state’s politics that the Clifford campaign was only the second-worst Supreme Court campaign we saw this year. But not sucking quite as bad as your opponent could not overcome the fact that the Ziegler campaign could go swimming in a pool of gold coins. I, for one, welcome our new WMC overlords. [...]
