I actually belive the main reason they are in trouble is LABOR UNIONS
because of them they are actually losing money on every Vehicle they sell
It is not good when you are paying thousands of people that are no longer working for you. This all stems from the early days of the Auto Industry when they made deals with the Auto Workers Union.

Business might exist only to make a profit, but the government exists to create a society. The free market is a great thing, and its success is closely related to the success of society, but they are not identical. Governments exist to regulate that market, and to prevent businesses from taking advantage of externalities that would otherwise ruin things for everyone (the tragedy of the commons, for example).

Also, if your business model depends on paying workers extremely low wages, maybe it's not a viable business model. If I went around mugging people, and someone pointed out that this was illegal, I couldn't plead that my business model requires it, and if you punish me for mugging people, I'll go out of business. I'd have to come up with a new business model.

Ford, and GM, and Chrysler are in trouble for two reasons: 1) they misjudged the market ten years ago, and focused on SUVs and trucks with high gas consumption, while their competitors focused on hybrid technology and fuel efficiency, as well as on making better cars. And 2) their competitors are based in countries with universal health care, which means that, unlike the Big Three, they're not burdened by those costs, and are free to focus on, you know, making cars.

Fair Load? Ideas like that are why Ford, Chevy and the other Car Comanies are in Trouble I just don't think it is a good Idea for the Government to Mandate Wages. I mean where do they get that Number did they just pull it out of a hat? How high do we need to go With the minimum wage. When will the Labor Unions say it's high enough? will 10.00 be high enough how about 15.00. Bussiness is not here to give you job they are here to make a profit

Jason,

If that's true those businesses are not paying their fair load. If its the EIC, BadgerCare, food stamps, AFDC, those businesses are being subsidized by tax payers and not self efficient.

Now, there may be businesses where we want to do this for, social good and all. But, for the majority of these businesses they are are drain on the economy.

Do you have a particular business in mind? When an employer is paying minimum wage that is not total cost. We also must take into account all the government programs needed to cover that substandard wage.

What I'm talking about are the very few people who actually do earn the Minimum wage. Small Business are the ones that are really getting hurt. If you are a small business owner and have 5 people working for you and 2 of them are working minimum Wage and you can barely pay your employee's. What are you going to do if the mimimum wage goes up?

Most economists will disagree with you about the minimum wage, Jason. At some point, it will indeed to more harm than good, but in the current environment, when the minimum wage has been stagnant for 10 years (and indexed to inflation, it's near an all-time low), it's unlikely to cause job losses among low wage positions. (Data from the 1996 increase showed no such effect).

There are undoubtedly teenagers who will get raises now, but the majority of those affected are adults, most of whom are responsible for more than half of their family's income -- a main wage earner, in other words.

I don't know what cultural hole you hide under, but the 'main wage earner' has not existed for most of us for about 30 years.

If you're argument is the minimum wage is mediocre and thus not nearly high enough I would agree with you. Also the minimum wage should use your book keeping, as in what it would take for 1 main wage earner to raise a family.

oh and about rasing the Minimum Wage that actually does more harm than good for those who earn it. In reallity the people who earn the Minimum Wage are ussually High School Kids and 2nd earners in a Family not the main wage earner

If you look at it this way. They did just start up a new government look at how long it took us to get our act together when we ratified our constitution. I was 8 years before we actually had a government running and that was with just 2 opposing factions. There are 3 In Iraq. It also doesn't help that According to an AP report that came out on Thursday 70% of the Folks causing the problems there are from the Golf states coming in through Syria. Heh I thought it was a Civil war sounds more like it's a Syrian Invasion. After they clean up Bagdad they need to go secure the Iraqi borders better heh that sounds familar doesn't it.

I totally agree that the IRAQI government needs to step up. But like I said we should give The Genaral and his plan a Chance I really hope it works and we can give the Iraqi Govenrment a true chance to Succeed because if Democracy gets a true foothold there that will be a very good thing for the world

I agree that leaving because we can't stomach casualties is a bad idea. The converse, however, of staying indefinitely, just to prove that you can stomach casualties is also a bad idea.

We can't make decisions based on "what will the Islamists think", or "what we think the Islamists will think", or worry too much about the symbolism of various foreign policy initiatives. What matters is the objective, real world results.

My best guess is that leaving would be better for our national interest, better for our foreign policy, and no worse for Iraq, than would staying.

A time table is a dumb idea when you're talking about announcing D-Day, or something. But what we're doing in Iraq is far closer to a colonial occupation than an actual war. What's needed is a political settlement, and time tables can be useful for that, because if the Iraqi government is unwilling to get its shit together in four years, I don't think we should keep spending our blood and money to prop them up (and it's not like the Iraqi government is some kind of bastion of enlightenment -- it's one faction in a civil war in which all sides are unpleasant and illiberal).

I think we should do what Gen. Petraius (I think I spelled that right) says and wait until August to see what happens and Make the decision then I really hope this works but I really think that setting a Time Table and telling them when we will get out is a bad Idea. I also think that leaving just because we can't stomach casualties is a bad Idea because if we do that all we will do if prove the Isamic Fascists right. if you want i can send you a link to an article spelling this all out

Jason, of course I hate war; doesn't everyone? But I'm not a pacifist. Wars are sometimes necessary, and when you start them, you better make sure you win.

But the war was won four years ago. Right now, we're a colonial army in the middle of a revolt-cum-civil war. What are we supposed to do in that situation? What constitutes "winning"?

There was certainly no shortage of good intentions when we invaded Iraq, but that doesn't change the fact that it was a bad idea. And whatever the merits of this "war of cultures", that's not what's going on in Iraq. We're not fighting any actual opponent. We're serving as policemen to a Iranian-influenced government, acting as a buffer between the various Iraqi sects, trying to kill terrorists that have moved to Iraq in the wake of the damage our war caused (and the Iraqis, Sunni and Shiite, are fighting against AQI as well), and trying to lessen the damage caused by their ongoing civil war.

We're being shot at from all sides. Most of the Iraqi Parliament wants us to leave. Most of the Iraqi people want us to leave, even though they worry that us leaving will make their civil war even worse.

I don't have any certainty that our withdrawal will work. Everything I've read about history and what we're doing in Iraq suggests it will be better than our staying there. But I could be wrong.

I do think the burden should be on those people who want us to stay in Iraq indefinitely to explain what the sacrifice they are demanding of us and our military, is buying us. So back to you: what are we trying to accomplish in Iraq, and does our strategy have any chance of accomplishing those goals?

I Know you Lefties hate war of any kind so I know why you want defeat. You should also know that one of the reasons the American people are against the war now is because they see cars getting blown up every night. After 4-5 years of constant Negitivism that will do that even the strongest willed person. I don't know about you but I belive what we are doing there is a good thing and needs to be done. I know you might not agree with me Ben but I have known you for a long time personally and you have certinally changed in alot of ways. I don't know what you may think this war is about but this is a war of cultures and it is one we need to win unless you want all the women in america in Burkas and everyone else praying to Allah 5 times a day or dead. and belive me the first ones they kill will the ones they see as weak and that will be the pacifist Left who don't want to stand up and fight for anything they just want to roll over unless it is Bush or the Rebulicans. well let me know where I am wrong if you can. I don't know if you've been watching the It has already started. and Multi Culturalism and PC is the reason it's getting a foothold in America already. Well have a good one Ben lets see if you can figure out who this is

I Know you Lefties hate war of any kind so I know why you want defeat. You should also know that one of the reasons the American people are against the war now is because they see cars getting blown up every night. After 4-5 years of constant Negitivism that will do that even the strongest willed person. I don’t know about you but I belive what we are doing there is a good thing and needs to be done. I know you might not agree with me Ben but I have known you for a long time personally and you have certinally changed in alot of ways. I don’t know what you may think this war is about but this is a war of cultures and it is one we need to win unless you want all the women in america in Burkas and everyone else praying to Allah 5 times a day or dead. and belive me the first ones they kill will the ones they see as weak and that will be the pacifist Left who don’t want to stand up and fight for anything they just want to roll over unless it is Bush or the Rebulicans. well let me know where I am wrong if you can. I don’t know if you’ve been watching the It has already started. and Multi Culturalism and PC is the reason it’s getting a foothold in America already. Well have a good one Ben lets see if you can figure out who this is
