It’s a standby of bad journalism — the interesting question to which the answer is no. From a Slate review of Transformers:

That planet was once home to two alien races: the upstanding Autobots and the sneaky Decepticons. (Does anyone but me hear the echo of “Democrats” and “Republicans” in these names?)

Although to be fair, Optimus Prime has been ranked #7 in the race for the Democratic nomination, despite his susceptibility to the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy:

Potential attack ad: “Sometimes Optimus Prime is a robot, other times a truck. Which is it, Mr. Prime? America deserves a leader that doesn’t transform whenever it’s convenient.”

Heh.
