Baseball photograph of the day
September 13, 2007
This photograph is Exhibit A for the argument that Florida is for spring training, not for real baseball.
That’s an actual photo from a (not delayed by rain) game yesterday against Washington, where “there were no more than about 400 fans in attendance at the game’s peak.” The crowd was quiet enough that the umpire threw out a fan for heckling him too loudly.
Dolphin Stadium is undoubtedly an awful place to watch a baseball game, but I somehow think a new stadium will not help revive a franchise with no actual fan base. The entire series with the Nationals “drew a total of perhaps 3,000 fans”.
The Brewers, by contrast, are averaging over 35,000 per game, and are on pace to set their all-time attendance record. It probably helps that their magic number is 18.
